Back to School Basics

School is right around the corner.  How do you know what you will need (or desperately wish you had) for the school year? Well, read my blog of course! Here is a list of things that I love to have handy during the school year.  Some things pertain to fashion, some pertain to school, and some just are awesome.  Enjoy!
(Disclaimer: The items I am placing on here are items that I do not own; however they are from companies I have purchased from and would purchase this type of item from again)

1. A Blazer
If you know me, you know I love a good blazer.  The best part of blazers is they can be worn in so many ways.  A hot pink blazer can jazz up jeans or sharpen up a skirt.  A blazer can be a boyfriend cut or a fitted- 3/4-sleeve gem.  In a blazer you can do you.  These are great for classes and job interviews.  Everyone should own a blazer! You can find blazers at all price ranges.  I have found some at Forever21 for cheap and I have found some at Ann Taylor for a bit more.  I do find however, you get what you pay for.  So be wise in picking out what you want!

Forever21-- $29.80
Ann Taylor -- $109.88
2. A Solid Pair of Leggings
Whether you are looking at going out on the town for some fun or you are procrastinating doing homework by watching vines, a good sturdy pair of leggings will do you well.  Many girls nowadays are wearing these see-through things comparable to tights or nylons.  No more of that ladies--we are ladies!  Leggings can be super fun and super cute with longer tops and even sweatshirts--as long as they are thick enough to hold you together.  Cache, the store I am so incredibly blessed to work for, has WONDERFUL leggings.  I can't even recommend another brand because I always buy them from here--they are worth every single little penny.  I have had a pair of mine from three years and I still have no problems with them.
Cache -- 158.00
Cache -- $88.00

3. A Matching Bra/Panty set
If you don't own one of these you are insane.  I haven't seen any research on this, but I am pretty sure 95% of successful women in the world had their first success while wearing a matching set.  Why? Because you feel confident.  Of course you can feel confident in mismatched undergarments.  Confidence certainly comes from within, but its nice to have that extra boost when you feel like you might need it.  You just feel prettier when you are dressed nicely from inside to out and from head to toe.  Try it.  Trust me.  Here is a link to one of my favorite websites for matching bra/panty sets.  I won't post my personal favorites because we are all totally unique in this particular area.  But, as far as I know this website is true to size and completely awesome.  Give the matching set a try.  I promise you will thank me later.
Adore Me

4. Little Black Dress (LBD)
A LBD can be worn for anything.  Parties, galas, formal events at school.  A great LBD can be dressed up and dressed down to match the occasion.  Everyone needs one not only for college but for LIFE!  LBDs can be worn with a multitude of colors depending on seasons and black goes perfectly with both silver and gold.  Black dresses are multipurpose dresses.
Cache -- $218.00
Charlotte Russe -- $29.99

5. A Pair of Flats
Heels are fun.  Heels look dressy. Heels hurt your feet.  If you aren't carrying a small clutch, you should tuck a nice pair of flats away into your purse.  It will keep you and your feet happy.
Target -- $19.99
Born Shoes -- $95.00

6.  A Statement Pair of Shoes
You can be a heel girl, or a tennis shoe girl, but either way you need a statement pair.  A pair that says "I know, I'm awesome." This statement pair of shoes should give you confidence, make you smile just because you are wearing them, and be totally unique to you.  What you wear on your feet says a lot about you, dress them up how you want people to see you.  Lots of times people walk with their eyes fixed on the ground--your shoes should make them look up at you because you're worth looking at.
Steve Madden -- $99.95
Converse --$65.00

7. Colored Pencils/ Coloring Book
I know what you are thinking, "Liv, You are insane." Yes, I know, tell me something new. (ha!) But in reality coloring can be calming and relaxing and plain ol' fun.  Pop out them coloring books with friends.  I love long talks with people, especially when we get into truly deep conversations, but sometimes I can't sit still.  Coloring helps me focus on the people I am with while giving me an outlet.  It also lets you be connected with the person you are with.  It keeps your hands off of the phone, computer, or remote.  So grab the coloring book and a few friends and make some memories.  Color a picture for your favorite professor.  Have fun.
Target -- $8.99 (Crayola is the only good brand-Do not buy Rose Art)

Target -- $11.69 (After all, this is a fashion blog)
8. A Beloved Mug (or two, or three, or four...)
This makes winter days so much warmer and the "I need a bowl of cereal, but all of the bowls are dirty" days a little more manageable.  I love carrying a mug to my observations because it makes me stand out to my kids.  They all have their favorite mugs and so on and so forth--it makes me feel special.  Have a couple mugs that you love.  That when you are having a good day it can rejoice with you, and when you are having a bad day it doesn't care if it catches a tear or two in your warm beverage of choice.  A beloved mug just feels at home in your hands.  I am not posting any links for this one because your mug has to be found wherever you are.  I have found mine at the goodwill, at target, and at other various shops and each one has a special place in my heart for whatever reason.

9. A Bold Red Lipstick
Yes.  Do the bold lip.  A  good red lip can show that you are fearless.  It shows you are powerful.  It enhances your beauty.  Make sure your red lipstick matches your skin tone--some people can do warmer tones and others need to stick to the cooler side of things.  If you go to any makeup store a consultant can help you find what's best for you.  You may feel like it doesn't look good at first, and you may be scared at first.  It is okay.  Give it a try.  Be the bold beautiful woman you are; show the world.
Urban Decay -- $22.00
Sephora -- $16.00
10.  You
Going back to school for some is easy and for others it is hard.  You need the truest, purest, most YOU that you can possibly have.  Always remember that first impressions are important, but remember if you are being the best you can be then that is perfect.  I say that because I don't want anyone to ever think that it is okay to not care what other people think, because it is important, but you can't please everyone.  "Today you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive that is youer than you." Thank you Dr. Seuss for blessing us with those words.

So there you have it ten things that I think are uber important to start off the school year with.  So get out there and Carpe diem this year, Dear

Cleanliness Beyond the Facial

Keep your pillow case clean!
I was speaking with someone recently about doing laundry.  Now, in college I do my laundry as little as humanly possible because the cost is outrageous.  This also gives me a reason to wear all of my clothes instead of just my favorites.  However, one thing I wash religiously are my sheets.  Your pillow case is a case full of germs; it can cause break outs and irritated skin.  Gross! While you sleep you are loosing skin cells, sweat, and oils from your body.  Where does all of that go? Your pillow case of course.  If you aren't consistent about washing your makeup off from the day, that too gets left in your pillow case.  So, let this be your little reminder to wash your sheets.  You can wash your face morning and evening, but if you lay your head on a filthy pillowcase your face will soak up those nasties and break out.  Luckily, you can prevent this!
Now that you have fresh sheets and are ready to get some sleep,
Carpe diem, Dear.

Mask Mondays: Double Trouble

I got frisky yesterday and decided to pamper myself because quite frankly I needed it.  Rough week.  So I decided to do a hair mask and a face mask.  The hair mask I made myself and the face mask I bought at Sephora.  (Can you tell I am addicted?) My pampering night turned out to be disaster.  I wasn't really a fan of either mask.

Hair Mask:
Tablespoon of Coconut Oil
Tablespoon of Honey
Tablespoon of Olive Oil
One Egg
Leave on for 15-20 minutes (The longer the better)

The first thing I noticed about this mask is that it smelled horrible.  Part of that is I hate the smell of coconut, so I should have known.  But I applied as I was told to--all over my hair and massaging at the roots to create more circulation in my scalp.  I then, as directed put a "shower cap" (I didn't get a real shower cap  so I used a plastic target bag--I read a few of these hair masks and ladies suggested this option on other websites and blogs.) This hair mask is supposed to make your hair silky and smooth.  This mask made my hair oily and clumpy.  I washed my hair twice as the lady who created the mask suggested, and it was horrible.  I ended up washing my hair four times to get all of this out of my hair! Now, I have heard coconut oil is fantastic for your hair.  Eggs are too.  I think it was the honey and olive oil in this mask that made it so difficult to wash out.  Unfortunately my hair was not a fan of the mask.  However, I am a fan of my shampoo, conditioner, and leave in awesomeness (5 in 1 hair perfecter).  If you have a few extra dollars and want to try an amazing hair product try Living Proof Perfect Hair Day.  Available here at Sephora.
As much as I didn't like this mask I still took pictures for you to laugh at.  Enjoy!

Face Mask:
Sephora Pomegranate Mask -- $6

This mask was significantly better than the hair mask, even though it wasn't as fulfilling as last weeks mask.  This mask was very easy to use after you got it open.  The mask is precut and put onto natural fibers.  It is very very wet and hard to unfold.  Once I got it unfolded (for the most part) the mask was HUGE on my face.  Now I am rather petite and most things are large on me, but I was really disappointed that this mask didn't fit better.  The mask ended up folding in on itself in a few spots.  Other than it not fitting properly, I guess I did like the mask.  It did even out my skin tone and I looked a little more bright and energized.  My rough week did seem to not be as apparent on my face as it had before the mask. Thank goodness!  I left the mask on for 20 minutes and was able to pin on Pinterest while I waited.  Pinning is always a good thing!
My pampering Sunday was not exactly what I expected, but it wasn't a complete flop either.  Next time I try a hair mask I will probably try less ingredients and I will remember to bring my scissors and trim down the face mask from Sephora.

On a more exciting note I reached VIB status at Sephora this week--even with all of the coupons I had! : ) Here are a few of the products I haven't talked about yet here on my blog, I love love love them!

Enjoy the week and have a wonderful week!

Mask Monday: Mask of Rouge

I am going to try to start something to keep consistency and interest up in my blog--Mask Monday. Kristen, of A Classy Fashionista, and I have been talking recently about face masks and how beneficial they can be.   Having a long distance BFF makes it difficult to do the same mask at the same time.  In August we will be having a Back to School Mask Bash! We can't wait. We will be teaming up some Mondays to bring you awesome masks and silly faces!  This week I am by myself, but she's posting a mask page today too. Check it out here!

I was on Pinterest the other day and found what someone had called "Big Red Mask" so I decided to give it a try because Red and Rouge are practically the same thing! So I took the liberty and renamed this mask to the Mask of Rouge.  It is super simple and oh so fun! The best part of this is it is quick and easily made with products that you have in your home! Here is the recipe and instructions:

2 Tablespoons of Honey
2 Tablespoons of Cinnamon
2 Tablespoons of Nutmeg
Optional: 2 Tablespoons of Ginger--I have a friend who adds ginger to this mask and swears by it.  I have yet to try this.
Leave the mask on for 15-30 minutes.  This mask can cause some tingling, but if you can take that for the full 30 minutes do it! It felt kind of good to me.
After the allotted amount of time rinse off.  I chose to wash mine off in the shower, but the sink is just as good!

The honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg have incredible uses for your skin.  The cinnamon stops the acne causing bacteria on your skin.  The honey helps with redness and discoloration and the nutmeg helps clear out your pores of blackheads.  Both cinnamon and nutmeg exfoliate your face by scrubbing away dead skin cells and other nastiness that may be left on your face.

Cinnamon bread
and cinnamon face
This mask was a little messy.  I think it is because the honey is runny! But it worked great none the less.  My face felt and looked a million times better.  It also left a cinnamon-y smell that was delicious.  It also tastes kind of good--like a pie!  I love knowing that I am putting all natural and edible products on my face.  My face gets a lot of make up that isn't all natural put on it, but when it comes to cleansing and masks thats what my face, and your face, deserves!

I am very excited about Mask Mondays! If you have a mask or have heard about a mask that you would like me to try let me know via the comments section!

Have a happy Monday and carpe diem, Dear!

Bathing My Brushes

I wasn't planning on posting today because I had a super long post yesterday, but I can't help but share this absolutely amazing product I found today.  Sephora is my lifesaver.  No joke.  I had a brush I could not get clean.  I had tried all of the DIYs and Sephora cleanser and this brush just kept getting makeup blobbed in it.  I loved the brush and couldn't bear parting with it.  So, I went in Sephora today and described my dilemma.  The lovely lady who helped me with my brush needs suggested this:
Solid Blendercleanser $15
Everyone needs this.  I was told it lasts a long time.  I am hoping it does because it is a little on the pricer side; however, this stuff cleaned my brush right up.  I didn't have to worry about Kleenex or paper towel particles ending up in my brush because this is a bar of soap.  I didn't have to worry about having a ton of paper products to throw away. All I did was get my bush wet and swish it around on this cute bar of soap and I watched as my makeup was lifted and washed off my brush.  Incredible! This is a lifesaver.  The lady at Sephora said to clean your brushes about once a week.  I can't wait to do that with this awesome product!

Now you have clean brushes so it's time to
Carpe diem, Dear!

Flying Fashion Faux Pas

I'm not perfect when it comes to fashion. Frankly, no one is. We all have off days. However, it seems that many people's off day is at one of the best people watching locations on the planet: the airport. After traveling all day from PHL to MDW to OMA, I've seen more than a couple things that just aren't quite right. I didn't want to take pictures because, well, that's rude. But, I will list these airport atrocities here just so you don't accidentally get those people watching mongrels giggling at you.
Alrighty, buckle your belts and prepare for takeoff!

1) The Typical Tropical Tee
Just no. Older men, younger men, the couple. Stop. The big, bright, bold pattern is never flattering. I get it. They are comfortable and they remind you of your latest trip, but pictures last longer and you don't have to worry about your big prints making you look bigger. Your better alternative is a simple one colored or smaller patterned polo. Darker colors on the plane hide things like sweat marks and pesky spills that may have occurred during turbulence. Remember, what happens in the tropics, stays in the tropics.

2) White Tee, White Undergarments.
Ladies, if your tee is white do not wear a white bra. Sorry to put it bluntly, but you can see it so clearly though the white shirt. Most of the time white tee shirts are not as opaque as you think. Therefore, putting anything white underneath makes that area darker or whiter and the rest show your flesh color. Uh-oh! It looks rather interesting. Unfortunately, many people don't know this rule: White under white is not all right! But now you do, so don't do it again! ;)
Your better alternative is a nude colored bra or cami. People won't notice and will only see your beautiful white tee!

3) Wear clothing that covers you. Even when wrinkled!
Today I saw the creases of a rump under a very wrinkled dress. I'm sure the dress would have covered her bottom had it not been wrinkled, but as of getting off the plane, it did not. For poor vertically challenged people like me, where many bottoms are eye level, it's hard to avoid seeing those dress code disasters. Your dress for traveling should always be at the knee or slightly above. That way you know, that I know, that You know you are not showing anything that I don't want to see. A recent up trend in Maxis has been wonderful to see. Maxis are never too short! (However, I have seen a black maxi that was see through. So, no matter the color, no matter the thickness double check your luggage and your behind!) Another great way to combat this criminal act would be to wear wrinkle free clothing. That way you never have to worry about wrinkled clothing when going to see the ones you love...or the ones you work for.

4) Do Not Sag Your Pants
Repeat! DO NOT SAG YOUR PANTS! I understand getting trough TSA with a belt is a hassle, but for your mother's sake, find a pair of jeans that fits your hips.  I have seen many males doing this, but I have seen a few women wearing saggy pants as well. Darlings, you say you wear your jeans up a size because of comfort; however, I guarantee anything you have to pull up more than once a day is less comfortable than hiking those jeans up every 5 minutes. And Gentlemen, your lady friends don't want to see your boxers, even of they have weed on them (yes, I saw this. Heaven help my generation.)

5) 5 Inch Stilettos
I get it. They are cute. You walk fine in them. You say you can even run in them. For heaven's sake put them in your carry on if you have to have them at your final destination. The airport is full of uncertainties, and any one of these uncertainties can hinder you from reaching your connecting gate or baggage claim. I would hate too see a heel break, a slip on a wet spot, or possibly a heel getting wedged in an escalator step! A better option would be kitten heels if heels are a must. They are easier to maneuver and classier. The best option would be a cute pair of flats. Whether they are plain black or bedazzled pink--flats are always a welcomed sidekick for strutting down the aisle of a crowded flight.

6) Pajamas
You are in public. You are not in your bedroom. You may have a long flight ahead, but more than likely someone is taking time out of their day to pick you up. The least you can do is throw on a pair of jeans or even yogas and look presentable and grateful for them picking you up. Pajamas don't do you to your gratitude justice. To stay comfortable and stylish try something like yoga pants or jeans for girls or jeans or cargo shorts for guys. There are comfortable and/or loose fitting options that leave you looking a little fresher and happier.

7) Sunglasses Inside.
It's just not that bright. Unless you're a celebrity; you're probably just not that cool. And that's okay. Take off the aviators and do you...without them. Unless you are going for the record of wearing sunglasses the longest. In that case, aviate on dude, aviate on.

8) That look where your hoodie hood is on your head but it's not actually on.
Do you know what I'm talking about? I remember doing this in 5th grade thinking it was cool, but if you are in your 20s it's not the best look. Especially if you are almost sprinting on the moving walkway. It's kind of like a failure cape....
To fix your silly superhero look and to make sure you still don't loose that precious hoodie tie it to your carry on or around your waist. I find tying it to my carry on works best because I can tie the arms tighter than I can around my waist. Hip problems, you know.... :)

9)Dirty Jeans.
You are going to be crammed into a tiny plane next to strangers, and you choose to wear muddy jeans and boots? Common sense would be to at least don a fresh pair. Simple solution--change your pants before you leave the house. If you can't do that; pack a spare pair. Please and thank you!

10) Shoeless on the Airplane.
This may not be a fashion faux pas if you have a fresh pedicure, but even then your feet may stink. If at all possible keep your shoes on! If you have to take your shoes off during the flight it might be in your best interest to wear sandals or shoes that allow your feet to breathe. This allows others to breathe on the plane. Phew!

So next time you are taking a trip across the country keep these simple rules in mind. You'll be thankful and the people watchers may be thankful too!
The current condition in your destination is perfect weather to carpe diem, dear! Thanks for enjoying reading and rouge and have a wonderful evening!

Bold and Beautiful

So a few days ago I posted all of my makeup tips and tricks.
Since then I have found THE BEST mascara in the world.  I am not fond of the name of this, but I have to admit this mascara is the bomb. It works so incredibly well.  If you want bold, beautiful, longer, more luxurious lashes use this:
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara $23
You will not regret this purchase.  I don't think I will ever buy another mascara again.  This one is too amazing.

So, now that you have Bold and Beautiful Lashes,

Sickly Advice

Yesterday I came down with a horrible throat infection.  I seriously thought I was dying.  If you ever get sick like this here are some pieces of advice for you, but let's all hope you never have to use it!

1. Go to the doctor right away.  Doctors are here to help and sometimes we just need an antibiotic to get things cleared up.  I went to an urgent care today and got an antibiotic and "Magic Mouthwash".  Thank heavens! I am feeling better already! The best part about these was they were not overly expensive.

2. Get a new toothbrush.  If you have a bad bacterial or viral infection in your throat get rid of anything you used near your mouth during that time.  If you keep using that stuff it will just come back; sometimes it will come back with a vengeance.  Yuck!

3. Get new lipsticks/ etc. Like I said in number 2 anything that has touched your mouth must go.  Better be safe than sorry.

4. You can alternate Ibuprofen and acetaminophen.  You can take up to four pills of Ibuprofen (I usually take two) every six hours and you can take 500mg of acetaminophen every six hours. This means approximately every three hours you can take some pain killers for that obnoxious sore throat.  This will help with any fevers or any swelling.  It also helps you keep on top of your pain.  The name brands of these are Advil (Ibuprofen) and Tylenol (Acetaminophen).  Double check with your doctor that these are mixable with other medications you are taking.

5.  Drink lots of fluids.  It may hurt to swallow but the last thing you need is to be dehydrated.  Drink a lot of water and other fluids to help you recover quickly! Drinking water also helps your skin, digestion, and other body functions! It's almost a win-win!

6. Rest rest rest rest rest rest rest.  My doctor told me that today.  Maybe double that many rests! The best thing you can do when you are sick is rest.  Whether it's sleeping, reading, movie watching, or tea sipping your body needs time to heal and feel better.  It takes a lot longer if you are trying to be active.

Back to resting for me! Have a wonderful healthy evening! :)

Carpe diem, Dear

Red, White, and Blue? Says Who?

Today is the Fourth of July! Just because our country's flag is red, white, and blue does not mean you are limited those colors! I opted for army green and burgundy today.  My shirt is sporting a bald eagle (even though you can't see it.)  Be creative on this fourth and stand out.  Even though those that fought for our freedoms in 1776 are not alive today, I want to say thanks to them! Also, Thank you to those who serve in the military defending our freedoms today. Happy Birthday, 'Merica! Have a happy and safe fourth!

My Face

Good evening!

This morning I did a very quick, not high quality, before-during-after post.  I told you all to be on the look out for a what it is and where to find it post.  So here we go:

Cleanser:
My face wash changes as much as a 1 month old needs his diaper changed so that is irrelevant.

Primer:
I use Mary Kay Foundation Primer with spf 15. I also received a sample primer from Sephora-Hourglass Veil- I LOVE IT. But it is 52 dollars, so I will stick with Mary Kay because I love her too, and I can always go to sephora and get samples.
Mary Kay Foundation Primer $16

Hourglass Veil $52

Foundation:
My summer foundation is Hello Flawless by Benefit. It is infused with oxygen and feels so light. It is also oil free--bonus! It has sun protection and we all know that too much sun is no fun--so protect up!
On top of my Hello Flawless I use Make Up Forever Duo Mat. I have NEVER had a better powder foundation in my life. You can always use the Hello Flawless by itself, but I love the extra coverage and matte finish.
Benefit Hello Flawless Liquid Foundation $36

Make Up For Ever Mat Duo $34

Bronzer/Blush:

I don't use either. But I do own a powder blush by tarte. If I need blush I use this. Great color (and they have a lot of colors one is sure to fit you)--Lasts forever.
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush $26

Eye Primer:
I use a little extra of my foundation primer on my eyes--always always prime! (That's my best advice.) If I can afford it in any certain month I buy urban decay's eye shadow primer. They have one you can wear as a shadow, as a base, or as a primer to completely cover up. I love the versatility.
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer $20

Eye Shadow:
I just started using Clinique's All About Shadow 8-pan pallet.  If I am not feeling particularly crazy on a specific day I will use a single shadow color; no fancy stunts.  I use maui wowie, virgin, sin, mildew, space cowboy, and naked They are phenomenal (all Urban Decay). I love Half Baked too--but it is very shimmery! *Side Note: USE PRIMER WITH URBAN DECAY
Clinique All About Shadow 8-Pan Palette $36
Urban Decay Eye Shadow $18

Liner:

I usually use bottom liner only. Pencil. Black. Whatever is cheapest at CVS or Wallgreens. Right now it is Rimmel London. It's good. I also have a new Makeup Forever Aqua Liner. It is a plumb-y color--I use it on my top lashes before I put on shadow (I did this with Maui Wowie by Urban Decay--GORGEOUS!) It brings out green tones because of the contrast.  Another eye liner I love (I just used it today on the top!! I was feeling ambitious.) is Maybelline Eye Studio creme eye liner in blackest black.  I also have this in eggplant and I cannot wait to use that color.
Add caption

Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner $23

Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner $7.94

Mascara:

Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara. period. I just purchased Urban Decay's Cannonball but haven't had a chance to use it yet.  It says it is "ultra waterproof".
Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara $19.50
Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara $20

Lips:
I swear by three things:
1) Clinique's Chubby Sticks (Mega Melon & Curviest Caramel)
Clinique's Chubby Stick $17
2) Clinique's Black Honey Almost Lipstick (LOOKS PHENOMENAL ON EVERY SKIN TONE--I have seen this in magazines. It nourishes with a tint of color. The color is beautiful. And has been said to work on every skin tone. Clinique made great product with this one!)
Clinique Almost Lipstick Black Honey $15

3)Maybelline Baby Lips Sunscreen. Protect those lips, girl! (Boys could use this too--it has no color and hydrates like crazy).
Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm $2.98
Finishers:
Urban Decay's Finishing spray All Night. Keeps your makeup locked and loaded all day. You stay and feel fresh.
I also just purchased Make Up Forever Mist and Fix.  I hear it is the best thing in the world.  Urban Decay, this stuff could give you a run for your money!
Urban Decay All Nighter $30

Make Up For Ever Mist and Fix Setting Spray $29

Where there you have it.  My make up and what I love and the make up that I am going to try.
What are some of the things you swear by? Do you have any make up tips and tricks? Leave a comment and let me know!

Carpe diem, Dear.
